The Department of State announced it has extended the validity of National Interest Exceptions (“NIE”) granted to travelers affected by the current travel suspensions. Previously, an approved NIE was valid for 3 months and could be used for a single entry into the U.S. Following this announcement from the Department of State, approved NIEs will be valid for 12-months from the date of approval and can be used for multiple entries, as long as the NIE is being used for the purpose under which it was originally granted.

This extension will apply to those who currently have approved NIEs or who were granted NIEs in connection with a visa application. Any NIE approved going forward will be granted a 12-month validity.

Affected travelers include those who are subject to the current travel suspensions for China, Iran, Brazil, South Africa, the Schengen Area, the U.K, Ireland, and India.

This update is welcomed news for many, as NIEs are being granted very sparingly. The previous 3-month validity and one-time use imposed an additional hardship on travelers, as airline cancellations and other travel complications due to the ongoing pandemic can make travel difficult during such a short period. The extended 12-month validity and ability to use an NIE for multiple entries will offer much needed relief to those who receive an NIE.
